Mueller Height (Curonian Spit)
The Mueller’s height is the highest point of the Bolotnaya (Bruchberg) dune which is the largest of those located near the village of Rybachy (formerly Rossitten). The height is named after the forest manager of the Koenigsberg forest administration Mueller who studied forest soils and introduced a new method of plantation allowing to fix the moving sands. Since the XVI century, the Bruchberg dune had moved towards the village of Rossitten and was stopped by forest plantations only in 1882. On the slope of this dune, there is a tourist route which introduces the natural dunes of Bruchberg. At the beginning, the route is a fairly flat path with the giant fir trees towering on both sides; the fir trees are more than 100 years old but soon there is a sharp upward climb equipped with a wooden staircase and handrails. From the viewing point you can see a beautiful panorama and the views of the Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon, Lake Chaika (in German Moewenbruch -Chaika Marsh) and located on its shore of the village of Rybachy (in German Rossitten). The area is the oldest part of the Curonian Spit, an island of the glacial origin of Rasite which provided the basis for the creation of the sandy body of the peninsula. There is a memorial stone there in honour of the Mueller forestry manager. The pedestrian route is called Mueller Height:
- Route length - 2 km;
- Located – 32nd km of the Spit, not far from Rybachy settlement;
- The route passes through a wet alder at the foot of the dune, along the centuries-old plantations of fir trees and pine trees of various species and along young plantings in the burnt area;
- The route has a viewing platform located at an altitude of 44.4 m above sea level.
