Swan Lake (Curonian Spit)
Swan is a unique lake of the eolian origin located on the tidal plain and separated from the Curonian Lagoon by a thin sand bridge. The lake appeared relatively recently in a small bay. The phenomenon is poorly studied. The lake is an oasis of waterfowls. There are mute swans, coots, great-crested grebes, mallards and grey herons there. The route presents the man-made coast protection works (rampart dune), unique landscapes of the sea coast, ‘Palva’ plain, large dune ridge and the coast of the Curonian Lagoon. The Swan Lake is surrounded by a moist alder forest, go-down to it along the slopes of dunes is prohibited in order to avoid the destruction of the rampart dune.
- Route length - 3 km;
- Located – 46th km of the Spit in the area of the highest dune ridge of the Curonian Spit;
- The route starts at the sea, runs along the western slope of the Sypuchaya dune (Kaspalgeberg) and further along an even plateau to the high crest of the Deer Buda dune ridge, where a viewing point is located about 55 m above sea level. The panorama that opens from it is a wide sea surface in the west, and in the east the multifaceted views of Lake Swan, meadows and the large expanses of water of the Curonian Lagoon gives an idea of the diversity of the Curonian Spit landscapes;
- The route borders on the preserved area of outstanding natural beauty.
