Botanic Gardens
The Botanical Garden, formerly the Konigsberg City Gardens, belongs to the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University. In the 20th century it was well-known in both Europe and in America. Its collection had 4,000 greenhouse plants and it provided valuable and unusual plants for decoration not only for the streets of Koenigsberg, but for the whole of East Prussia. The establishment suffered significant losses during the Second World War but soon began to recover and was replenished with exotic, heat-loving plants. Today, on 14 hectares of the Botanical Garden there are more than 20,000 collection items. Recently, a Pharmaceutical Garden has been started, containing an unusual collection of cacti and succulents.
